Three Hioki Products Including the AC Clamp Power Meter CM3286 Win 2017 Good Design Awards

October 10, 2017 - Nagano, Japan

Hioki is pleased to announce that its AC Clamp Power Meter CM3286 and CM3286-01; Non-Contact AC Voltage Probe SP3000 and AC Voltage Probe SP9001; and RGB Laser Illuminance Meter TM6102, RGB Laser Luminance Meter TM6103, and Optical Power Meter TM6104 have received 2017 Good Design Awards from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.

The AC Clamp Power Meter CM3286 and CM3286-01 are clamp-on meters with functionality for measuring power and phase difference. In addition to the ability to measure properties such as current, voltage, and power, the instruments provide functionality for discovering electricity theft, which is a major problem in developing nations in areas such as Southeast Asia.

The Non-Contact AC Voltage Probe SP3000 and AC Voltage Probe SP9001 are compact voltage probes that make it easy to observe voltage signals carried by small cables such as wire harnesses from outside the cable’s insulation. The products incorporate no-metal-contact voltage measurement technology that was first developed and commercialized by Hioki.

The RGB Laser Illuminance Meter TM6102, RGB Laser Luminance Meter TM6103, and Optical Power Meter TM6104 utilize a new measurement technology known as the Discrete Centroid Wavelength Method that allows direct measurement of the centroid wavelength and optical power of RGB laser light sources, which are poised to enter into increasingly widespread use in the future. This capability allows accurate adjustment of the white balance of displays that use RGB lasers.

The Good Design Awards have recognized and encouraged overall design for more than 50 years. This year’s three awards bring the total number of Good Design Awards won by Hioki since it first received the honor in 1985 to 69, including two Long Life Design Awards.

The judges who selected the products offered the following comments concerning their merits:

AC Clamp Power Meter CM3286/CM3286-01
The CM3286/CM3286-01 offers an extensive range of measurement functionality in a compact footprint, most notably the ability to check for electricity theft in emerging nations. The product has carried on Hioki’s proven clamp meter design while offering the functionality and ease of use that customers have come to expect from such instruments, along with a highly socially significant design that demonstrates an understanding of how workers check for electricity theft in emerging nations and applies the results of observing how such products are used in the field in order to create a more useful instrument. One hopes that the product will serve to eliminate the problem of electricity theft.

AC Non-Contact Voltage Probe SP3000 and AC Voltage Probe SP9001
First, this award recognizes Hioki’s proprietary no-metal-contact measurement technology, which allows measurement of voltage waveforms from outside a wire’s insulation, without any need to make contact with a metal terminal. Further, it recognizes the product’s technology and design, for example in terms of the implementation of that technology in an instrument that can be applied to wires single-handedly in confined locations and designers’ success in creating a small, hands-free probe that need not be supported by the end-user.

RGB Laser Illuminance Meter TM6102, RGB Laser Luminance Meter TM6103, and Optical Power Meter TM6104
Hioki invented the Discrete Centroid Wavelength Method for instruments used to measure laser light sources, a technology that promises to boost productivity in the manufacture of displays by speeding up the white balance adjustment process, which has previously required skill and experience. This award recognizes a waste-free, functional design that allows the instrument to be easily aligned with the laser’s optical axis from the side simply by aligning a mark on the enclosure with the beam.
