Hioki Launches ALDAS-E, a High-Voltage / High-Current EIS Measurement System for MW-Class Electrolyzers and Large Fuel Cell Stacks
ALDAS-E system for EIS measurement
Nagano, Japan, 27th March 2026 – Hioki E.E. Corporation today announced the release of ALDAS-E, a new electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement system designed for the development, evaluation, and operation-stage analysis of large cell stacks used in water electrolyzers and fuel cell systems. By enabling high-accuracy impedance measurement under real operating conditions, ALDAS-E helps engineers shorten evaluation cycles, optimize operating windows, and better understand internal states and degradation factors, supporting the wider adoption of hydrogen technologies and progress toward a more sustainable society.
Development Background
As global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality accelerate, hydrogen continues to gain attention as a key element in the energy transition. According to estimates by the International Energy Agency (IEA), global hydrogen demand is expected to reach approximately 100 million tons in 2025*1, highlighting the growing importance of hydrogen across industries.
Hydrogen is expected to contribute to decarbonization in multiple sectors, from mobility applications such as automobiles and shipping, to energy storage and power generation through co-firing*2—helping reduce CO2 emissions across the value chain.
- *1:Global Hydrogen Review 2025 – Analysis, IEA
- *2:Co-firing refers to a technology used in thermal power generation in which hydrogen is mixed with conventional fuel, helping reduce CO2 emissions.
Product Overview
ALDAS-E is an EIS measurement instrument designed for large-scale electrolyzer and fuel cell systems equipped with large cell stacks. By performing EIS measurements during demonstration tests or commercial operation, users can:
- Explore optimal operating conditions in real systems
- Estimate internal states within the stack
- Identify and track degradation factors over time
- Compare performance across the full stack and individual cells
In February 2025, Hioki launched the Electrolysis Cell Analyzer ALDAS-Mini, tailored for evaluating large cells and small stacks. In October 2025, Hioki introduced the EIS Measurement System ALDAS-α (ALDAS Alpha) for R&D of electrolysis cells and fuel cells. With the addition of ALDAS-E, the ALDAS series now provides a comprehensive measurement lineup covering fundamental research, development, demonstration testing, and commercial operation.
Key Features
- 1. MW-Class Measurement Capability for Large Electrolysis Systems
- EIS measurement at the demonstration and commercial stages has historically been difficult for large electrolysis systems. ALDAS-E supports stack voltages up to 1000 V and electrolysis currents up to 10,000 A, enabling evaluation of electrolysis systems from several hundred kW to MW-class.
- 2. Faster Evaluation Cycles
- Conventional electrochemical measurement instruments often require more than 30 minutes for a single EIS measurement. In contrast, ALDAS-E completes a measurement in approximately 7.6 minutes per cycle*3, helping users significantly improve test throughput and operational efficiency.
- *3: Measurement time may vary depending on conditions.
- 3. Simple Integration with Existing Equipment
- Using a clamp-type connection, ALDAS-E can be connected to existing electrolysis systems and evaluation setups without equipment modification, reducing the need for costly retrofits and enabling faster start-up of EIS measurement.
- 4. Simultaneous Measurement of Multiple Cells
- ALDAS-E supports simultaneous measurement of up to 48 cells within a stack, enabling comparison and analysis across both the entire stack and individual cells.
Main Applications
- EIS measurement of large stacks from several hundred kW to MW-class
- Accelerated degradation testing of cells and stacks
- Monitoring of ohmic resistance during long-term durability testing
