Introduce VCS-certified and CCB-certified carbon neutral gas toward a sustainable society
HIOKI will switch all gases used at its headquarters to carbon neutral gas (CNG) on May 1st, 2023. The CNG will be provided by Ueda Gas Co., Ltd.※1
In February 2022, we formulated the "Basic Sustainability Policy" and the “HIOKI Sustainability Declaration”, which sets targets for CO2 emission, with the aim of realizing a sustainability society. The HIOKI Sustainability Declaration calls for achieving Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon neutrality by 2025 (the 90th anniversary of HIOKI’s founding) and achieving Scope 3 carbon neutrality by 2035 (the 100th anniversary of that).
In order to offset the Scope 1 gas, we will switch to CNG with VCS*2 and CCB*3 certification. This offsets the CO2 of domestic Scope 1 gases.
The VCS and CCB certified CNGs to be adopted this time are supplied by the REDD+*4 project, which mainly supports Indonesia. We believe that it will be useful for environmental conservation as set forth in the Basic Sustainability Policy, and we will provide support overseas.
- *1:Carbon neutral gas: CN gas is based on carbon credits certified by a credible certifier as deriving from CO2 reduction efforts at forest conservation projects, etc. based around the world. These carbon credits offset greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire natural gas value chain process from development to combustion.
- *2:VCS (Verified Carbon Standard): A standard for credit certification by VERRA, an international carbon offset standards management organization based in Washington, U.S.A.
- *3:CCB (Climate, Community, and Biodiversity): A standard that certifies the positive effects of the three aspects.
- *4:REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation +): A concept defined in the Cancun Agreement (2010) that adds the prevention of forest degradation through forest management and the active increase of carbon stocks through afforestation to REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), which means the reduction of CO2 emissions through the control of deforestation and forest degradation.
