Hioki Launches JIS Class AA and DIN Class B-compliant Lux Meter FT3424

Instrument Measures Illuminance of LED lighting

Nagano, Japan

Hioki E.E. Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the Lux Meter FT3424.

Illuminance meters are used to measure the brightness of light sources. Illuminance is defined by JIS and other standards, and the FT3424 complies with general classes AA and A as set forth in JIS C 1609-1:2006 and Class B devices under DIN 5032-7.

The instrument is capable of measuring a broad range of illuminance values, enabling its use in testing targets ranging from emergency and guidance lighting in buildings to lighting in healthcare and medical facilities such as operating rooms (measurement range: 0.00 to 200,000 lux). It can also measure LED lighting, which has been growing in popularity recently.

Compared to the previous model, the new FT3424 features a new timer hold function as well as the ability to save up to 99 values in its internal memory.

Role of illuminance meters
Illuminance is defined as the brightness of light projected onto a flat surface, and illuminance meters measure this property in lux (lx).

Illuminance standards are defined for a variety of activities and settings based on the JIS, DIN, and other standards. For example, the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Standards of School Hygiene require that illuminance values measured in multiple locations fall within a range defined by a certain standard, and illuminance meters are used to make those measurements.

Principal Application
Inspections and maintenance of lighting equipment in buildings, etc.

Product Features
1. Compliance with general classes AA and A of JIS C 1609-1:2006
The FT3424 complies with general classes AA and A as defined by the JIS standards, making it suitable for use as a general-use illuminance meter.
Class AA: Instruments that are used in illuminance measurement in lighting locations where illuminance values are required to exhibit a certain degree of reliability, for example in evaluating compliance with standards and rules
Class A: Instruments that are used to measure illuminance in applications requiring practical illuminance values

2. Broad measurement range, from low to high illuminance (0.00 to 200,000 lux)
The FT3424 can measure illuminance values ranging from 0.00 lux to 200,000 lux. Consequently, it can be used to measure low illuminance levels such as those of emergency and guidance lighting as required by the Fire Service Act. It can also be used to make measurements in healthcare and medical facilities where high illuminance levels of around 100,000 lux are required (examination and testing spaces, operating rooms, etc.).

The instrument can also be used to measure LED lighting, which has been growing in popularity recently.

3. Timer hold function to keep worker clothing or shadows from affecting measurement results
When measuring the illuminance of emergency or guidance lighting, the possibility exists that readings may be influenced by workers’ clothing or shadows. The FT3424 addresses this issue with a new timer hold function that fixes the measured value after a preset amount of time has elapsed when the TIMER key is pressed. This delay gives workers enough time to move away from the illuminance meter, eliminating the need to worry about workers affecting measurements.

4. Ability to save up to 99 values in internal memory
The FT3424 provides new capability for saving up to 99 values in its internal memory. This functionality is extremely convenient when measuring multiple classroom locations to establish compliance with school environmental hygiene standards.
