">" mark is displayed to the left of the measured value. (Digital insulation testers)

QThe measured value displayed ">500MΩ". What does this ">" mark mean? (Insulation Tester IR4053)

A

Digital insulation testers will display something like ">500MΩ" when the measured value is greater than the maximum display value (∞).
The maximum display value depends on the "Rated output voltage". The ">" display corresponds to the "∞" display of an analog insulation tester.
Note that the same indication will appear even if the test leads are broken or have poor contact.
Be sure to short-circuit the tip of the test lead for continuity check before measurement.
