Hioki Launches SMD Test Fixture IM9110

Hioki is pleased to announce the launch of the SMD Test Fixture IM9110, the world’s first fixture capable of measuring 0201-size SMDs.

As smartphones and wearable devices get smaller, manufacturers continue to shrink components (SMDs) mounted on circuit boards. The IM9110 supports measurement of 0201-size SMDs (dimensions: 0.25 mm × 0.125 mm), which are forecast to enter into increasingly broad use in the future.

The IM9110 is used by attaching it to a Hioki LCR meter.

Development Background

As smartphones and wearable devices get smaller, manufacturers continue to shrink components (SMDs) mounted on circuit boards. Although the 1005 size (1 mm × 0.5 mm) was the most widely used for SMDs around 2010, the 0603 size (0.6 mm × 0.3 mm) and 0402 size (0.4 mm × 0.2 mm) since have seen rapid growth in popularity, and the 0201 size (0.25 mm × 0.125 mm) is forecast to gain market share in the future.

Component manufacturers need to measure frequency and other characteristics during product development, and they need to conduct sampling inspections as part of the production process. For their part, manufacturers of electronic devices that use SMDs need to measure characteristics during acceptance inspections of SMDs delivered by suppliers and under conditions of actual use. In doing so, technicians must use hardware known as an SMD test fixture in order to connect the SMD under test to an LCR meter or other measuring instrument. Hioki developed the world’s first 0201-size SMD test fixture in response to high market demand for a 0201-capable fixture, a product that until now was not available.

1. Support for measuring 0201 SMDs (a world-first)
The IM9110 can measure 0201 (0.25 mm × 0.125 mm) SMDs. In this product, Hioki has developed the world’s first test fixture capable of measuring 0201 components.

2. Easy sample loading with integrated door to keep samples from popping out of the fixture
The IM9110 incorporates a guide groove to ensure that specimens are easy to load and a door that closes when the probes make contact to keep the specimen from popping out of the fixture.
