Radically Improved Efficiency for Inspection of High-Voltage PV Inverters with Multi-Channel Power Measurement by a New Data Logger Module

HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION has released the new M7103 Power Measurement Module. The M7103 is a module designed for the LR8101 and LR8102 data loggers released last year. It can measure power on power lines up to a maximum voltage of 1,500 V. The combination of one LR8102 data logger and four M7103s enables multi-channel power measurement of up to 12 channels. Furthermore, this combination can be expanded to up to 120 channels by connecting in series. This benefits users who require multi-channel power measurement. The M7103 streamlines shipping inspections and quality evaluations of solar (a.k.a.  photovoltaic) inverters, Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and other devices. It will further accelerate the global spread of next-generation energy systems that will contribute to a decarbonized society.

Combination of 4 M7103 power measurement modules, LR8102 data logger, and dedicated power supply module M1100

Background

Renewable energy is spreading worldwide to help attain a decarbonized society. Solar power systems, one of such renewable energy sources, are increasingly being made with higher voltages to improve power generation efficiency and reduce costs. These high-voltage PV (photovoltaic) inverters offer many advantages, such as size reduction and decreased power loss. PV products compatible with DC 1,500 V, which are currently mainstream for energy efficiency, are replacing products ranging from DC 600 to 1,000 V (standard until very recently).

Manufacturers of PV inverters inspect various parameters related to power quality, such as power, harmonic distortion1, and conversion efficiency, at the time of shipment for all products. However, high voltage brings new challenges such as the need for larger scale and more complex measurement systems. String inverters2 require connections to dozens of points for power measurement. All of the necessary connection points for these high-precision power measurements inevitably mean that the measurement systems must be very large.

  • 1 Harmonic distortion: Distortion of AC voltage or current waveforms, which is one of the evaluation indicators of power quality.
  • 2 String inverter: A type of PV inverter that has high conversion efficiency due to multiple independent DC-AC conversions

The ESS is a new type of power infrastructure that has been actively developed in recent years. A typical ESS consists of large-capacity batteries connected in series. The connection of many batteries increases the overall voltage. Shipping inspections for ESSs require multi-channel, high-voltage power measurement, just like PV inverters.

Hioki has been providing power measurement technology solutions for many years. Hioki’s high-performance products such as power analyzers are already widely used for R&D applications in next-generation energy systems throughout the globe. Next-generation energy systems such as high-voltage PV inverters and ESSs are fields that are already seeing practical usage in society. The application scenes for the M7103 are inspections in manufacturing processes and quality assurance. In development of this module, emphasis was put on high voltage, space-saving, and expandability.

The M7103 will improve production efficiency of these next-generation energy systems, which is Hioki’s contribution to the realization of a decarbonized society.

Key features of the M7103 Power Measurement Module

Maximum input voltage of DC 1,500 V for high-voltage system measurement

The M7103 is suitable for measuring high-voltage systems such as solar power generators and ESSs. The maximum direct input voltage is DC 1,500 V and AC 1,000 V. It can measure 1,500 V PV inverters which are currently mainstream.

Modular design that allows flexible channel number expansion

The M7103 can measure power for 3 channels. Compared to Hioki’s flagship power analyzer PW8001 (maximum 8 channels), one logger set3 can measure more power channels (12 channels) with a comparable size.

By combining 10 logger sets, power of up to 120 channels can be measured. It can be flexibly expanded to match the demand of each application, such as the evaluation of a newly built ESS or shipping inspection of a variety of PV inverters from differing production lines.

  • 3 A maximum of 12 power channels can be measured with one set of 1 data logger LR8101/LR8102, 4 power measurement modules M7103, and 1 AC power module M1100.

Streamline system evaluation with simultaneous measurement of power and temperature

The combination of the M7103 and temperature     measurement modules enables simultaneous measurement of power and temperature. This enables engineers to observe the unique correlations such as the correlation between conversion efficiency and heat generation of PV inverters, or the correlation between charge/discharge characteristics and temperature changes of ESS battery packs. As such, a more complete evaluation of systems can be done through the multiple logging of power and temperature.

Applications

  • Power evaluation for every channel of high-voltage PV inverters
  • Shipping inspection and quality evaluation of high-voltage PV inverters
  • BMS (Battery Management System) evaluation and charge/discharge testing of ESSs
  • Performance evaluation of large-capacity battery packs for electric vehicles and PHVs (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle)
