(April 2010, Nagano, Japan) HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION has launched the MEMORY HiLOGGER LR8400 Series with new multi-measurement capabilities including temperature, humidity, voltage, resistance, pulse, and logic. The instrument ships standard with 30 channels and can be expanded with up to two 15-channel terminal blocks (for a maximum of 60 channels). About the size of an A4 sheet of paper, the device is approximately the same size as the previous generation of multi-channel loggers and maintains the ease of use of the traditional terminal block design.
Development Background
Data loggers are used in a broad range of applications to convert temperature, humidity voltage, resistance, and other measurement data into electrical signals and record their values over long periods of time. In vehicle development and onboard component evaluation, they are used to measure fluctuations in battery voltage following abrupt changes in load and to take readings inside vehicles subject to high levels of vibration. Instruments used in the maintenance of manufacturing and production equipment must be capable of measuring dozens of channels at a time.

The newly launched MEMORY HiLOGGER LR8400 Series brings distinct advantages to applications such as these by delivering multi-channel measurement capability in a more compact footprint.
LR8400 Series Features
  1. Effective reduction in product size
The standard-configuration 30-channel LR8400 Series can be expanded with up to two 15-channel units. HIOKI’s engineers effectively reduced the size of the instrument by keeping it roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper, even with the additional terminal blocks installed. Measurement of up to 60 channels is supported.
  2. Lower per-channel cost
The LR8400 offers a lower per-channel cost than the previous 8420-51 Series.
  3. Resistance value logging
The LR8400 Series provides new capability for measuring changes in resistance caused by factors such as temperature and humidity or pressure.
  4. Significantly improved measurement functionality
With a maximum sampling speed of 10 ms, the LR8400 Series measures input at 10 times the speed of previous models. Additionally, high-performance filter processing counteracts the adverse effects of commercial 50/60 Hz power supplies, allowing high-precision measurement. In the event of a power outage that takes down the system, a “start back up” function allows the instrument to immediately resume measurement following the resumption of power.
  5. Protection of instrument and measurement devices from excessive input and unexpected external interference
Thanks to a maximum ground-to-input voltage of 300 V AC/DC, a maximum channel-to-channel voltage of 300 V DC*1, and a maximum terminal-to-terminal input voltage of 100 V DC, the LR8400 Series can measure cell voltages and temperatures in battery modules and fuel cell stacks.
*1: Universal Unit LR8501-20 only. Maximum channel-to-channel voltage is 250 V DC when using Voltage and Temperature Unit LR8500-20.
  6. Extensive storage media functionality
The LR8400 Series supports USB memory and CF cards, making it possible to gather and store data in real time. Media can be changed without interrupting recording, allowing you to remove the PC card or other media during measurement and literally take the data with you. Furthermore, the instrument can now communicate with a computer via a USB or LAN link.
  7. Crisp, clear TFT color LCD screen
The LR8400 Series uses a crisp, clear TFT color LCD screen. The VGA display (resolution: 640 × 480 dots) offers improved functionality compared to previous models*2.
*2: Previous models were limited to a screen resolution of 320 × 240 dots.
