HIOKI (HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION; Head Office: Ueda, Nagano Prefecture; President: Tatsuyoshi Yoshiike) has launched the new DC SIGNAL SOURCE SS7012, an essential tool in the maintenance of control systems at factories, buildings, and power plants; semiconductor manufacturing systems; and other precision hardware.
Introduction
Factory and building control systems and semiconductor manufacturing systems currently incorporate numerous instruments and rely upon complex operational sequences that are controlled by means of electric signals. By generating electric signals for testing purposes, DC signal sources play a critical role in verifying that embedded instruments are displaying accurate values and functioning properly.

HIOKI DC signal sources have a successful track record of use in numerous applications such as those described above. With the solar power market expected to expand in the future, HIOKI DC signal sources are expected to see increasingly frequent use in applications such as the generation of mock input for actinometers, which are used by solar power conditioners to measure solar radiation.

It was against this background that HIOKI developed the new SS7012.
Overview of the DC SIGNAL SOURCE SS7012
In addition to its ability to generate constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) signals, which are required in order to verify the accuracy of instruments’ indicated values, the SS7012 can measure voltage and current. The instrument can generate constant voltage signals of up to ±25 V and constant current signals of up to ±25 mA, and it can measure voltage values of up to ±28 V and current values of up to ±28 mA.

Additionally, the SS7012 can measure temperature and generate eight types of thermo-electromotive force.

The SS7012 also incorporates a number of improvements from its predecessor that allow it to deliver a high degree of stability while operating continuously for more than twice as long, an enhancement that reflects the fact that the instrument is often used in the field.
Advanced Features
  1. Optimization for instrumentation maintenance (loop testing)
In addition to its ability to output DC voltage signals of up to 25 V, the SS7012 can measure DC currents of up to 28 mA, making it possible to check 2-wire transmitters* used in factories, power plants, buildings, and other facilities. Additionally, its DC 24 V voltage output pin can absorb a load current of up to 25 mA, allowing the instrument to be used to check distributors**.
  2. Ability to generate eight types of thermo-electromotive force
The SS7012 can output voltage signals for K, E, J, T, R, S, B, and N thermocouples as defined by JIS C 1602-1995 and IEC 584-1, simplifying the thermometer calibration process.
  3. Continuous operation over extended periods of time
The SS7012 is designed to be field-portable and capable of continuous operation for extended periods of time. The instrument can be operated continuously for close to three hours—more than twice as long as previous models (when generating constant voltage or constant current).
  4. Computer-controllable
The SS7012 has a USB 1.1 interface, allowing a dedicated computer application to be used to control the instrument remotely and to create programs for generating complex signal input and output.

*Two-wire transmitter: A transmitter that shares power supply and signal lines using two wires; often used in instrumentation applications.

*Distributor: A signal distributor that is used in combination with a 2-wire transmitter.
