| HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION has developed the BATTERY HiTESTER 3554 for assessing the condition of lead-acid batteries. As the successor to popular earlier Models 3550 and 3551, the Model 3554 went on sale in March 2006. |
| Why assess the condition of lead-acid batteries? |
| Lead-acid secondary batteries are commonly used in UPSs (uninterruptible power supplies) and in backup power supplies for emergency power. Repeated recharging of secondary batteries eventually leads to battery deterioration, evidenced by increased internal resistance and decreased capability to hold a charge. Serious problems can occur if an internal cell develops a short circuit, causing low voltage and potential overheating that can result in a fire.
With the new BATTERY HiTESTER 3554, you can be assured of quick and accurate diagnosis of deterioration by measuring the internal resistance and terminal voltage of backup type lead-acid batteries in the field, without having to disconnect or shut down the system. |

| What are the differences from earlier HIOKI models? |
| HIOKI developed the BATTERY HiTESTER 3554 as a successor to Models 3550 and 3551, to answer battery-testing needs that changed and grew over the past few years but which could not be sufficiently addressed with the existing models. For example, improvements to the measuring circuitry and the averaging function in the model 3554 provide greater stability of measurements under the severe noise environment inside of a UPS. Also, the basic design of the test leads was modified and greatly enhanced. Problems with probe deformation and dirt adhesion under normal usage have been practically eliminated. The results of up to 4800 measurements can be stored in internal memory, and management of measurement data on a PC is simplified by the integration of a USB interface. |

| Overview |
| BATTERY HiTESTER 3554 quickly diagnoses the condition of lead-acid batteries by measuring the internal resistance and voltage of batteries used for backup in UPSs and emergency power supplies in the field, without shutting down the system. The four-range design covering 0.001 mΩ to 3.100Ω enables easy measurement of the mid- and high-capacity sealed lead-acid batteries in these devices. By simply specifying primary and secondary limits for the battery resistance and the minimum voltage threshold, the battery tester quickly displays Pass, Warning or Fail based on the combination of reference values, for fast and accurate assessment. |

| Primary Features |
| 1. |
Auto-Hold and Auto-Memo functions |
| Auto-Hold and Auto-Memo functions automatically hold measurement values for display and store them in internal memory each time the probe touches a measurement point. With no need to press a switch, measured values are reliably and automatically recorded as soon as they become stable. One can now perform measurement and recording operations that previously required two technicians. When used together with the newly developed test probes, quick measurements can be taken even in cramped locations. |
| 2. |
Ample memory stores data from up to 4800 measurements |
| The instrument's internal memory stores battery data for a maximum of 4800 measurements (in 12 sets of up to 400 measurements each) for approximately an entire week's worth of measurements. |
| 3. |
Re-designed circuitry with enhanced noise immunity |
| Strong noise immunity is necessary to obtain accurate measurements on batteries in a UPS, which includes a continually running inverter or rectification circuit. Model 3554 utilizes higher measurement current than former models, so the redesigned measurement circuit provides more stable measurements, and with the averaging function, provides measurements strongly immune from the effects of electrical noise. |
| 4. |
Measure up to 60 volts |
| The input terminals of Model 3554 accept up to 60 V DC, so even 48 V systems such as forklifts and electric vehicle circuits can be safely measured. An easily replaceable internal fuse provides protection from overvoltage. |
| 5. |
USB interface provides simpler data management on a PC |
| For data management in a spreadsheet program on a PC, Model 3554 includes a USB interface and dedicated application program for transferring measurement data. The bundled software also allows editing of the instrument's internal comparator tables, and data edited on a spreadsheet can be transferred back to the instrument. |
| 6. |
Measurement efficiency is improved by the small size, light weight and newly designed test probes |
| Two types of measurement probes have been developed for the 3554: the single-axis Model 9465-10 (standard accessory) that retains the same capabilities as former models, and a new dual-axis Model 9772 (optional accessory) that allows flexible angling and a wider contact angle to accommodate awkward testing environments, thereby greatly improving work efficiency. Both models are designed for tough handling, and under normal use, tip deformation and dirt adhesion are eliminated, but if a tip does become damaged, it can be easily replaced on site without the need for any special tools. |
| 7. |
Tough carrying case |
| Designed to offer easy and safe mobility between field sites, the supplied hard case provides extra shock resistance for mounting on moving vehicles. |
